- Session restore brings up tabs that I had closed before closing Firefox. Sometimes it even selects a tab that I didn't have selected when I closed it.

- Leaking memory like nobody's business. It went from 500 MB to 1.5 GB overnight (i.e. while it was "idling" minimized on the desktop).

- The config.trim_on_minimize setting is missing. Why is this?

- When the memory usage gets above ~1 GB (FYI, this is a guess), I start seeing problems with Firefox displaying web-page graphics and even, in one instance, shutting down text input on a web page (this was within Facebook).

- Randomly crashes for no apparent reason. FYI, this happened after I updated to Firefox 28 as well.

None of these problems ever happened before I upgraded to Firefox 28 and 29. I'm very close to abandoning Firefox altogether if these problems are not resolved promptly and permanently. In other words, I've nearly had enough of this. Whatever happened to "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

In response to JBS1949's comment

Are you sure you created a new thread? I don't see a new question listed on your profile. I've been following this thread very loosely so I haven't seen you ask anything about what's bothering you. You should create a new thread this time at /questions/new as more than likely, this thread is merely discussing amongst yourself.

I posted a question to the message board before I found this thread. I don't know what happened to it.

more options

Well, whatever happened, it's not there. I don't think me or any other Moderator deleted it unless it violated our Mozilla Support rules and guidelines but usually a Moderator would post a reply letting you know what's happening with your thread.

Please create a new thread at /questions/new so we can see what's up with your issue.

more options

That looks like a bug with CTR, and you should talk to them about it.

you can downgrade here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/28.0/win32/en-US/

that's the only way to go. also you can delete the update installation folder in case it persistently tries to download.. and make sure you change the auto update options..

Thanks for sharing your views everyone. I think this thread should now be closed. Take development discussion elsewhere. If you have a genuine support question ask your own question using /questions/new discussion

I have tagged it as escalate & unless HelpDesk staff state categorically that it is to remain open, because HelpDesk themselves are to continue to post in this thread or ask developers to do so then it is serving no useful purpose. (An Admin has already confirmed to me the Australis / Firefox 29 Development subject is off topic)

Developer decisions and feature requests are outside of the scope of this forum. The forum is intended for single user questions not long discussion thread. Especially on topics that are themselves not within the scope of the forum.

See guidelines current guidelines include

* Posts in the Mozilla support forum must be either questions about the use of Firefox, .... Users who post about things other than Mozilla support will be directed to an alternative discussion place .....
* Create one thread and only one thread for each subject you want to discuss.
* For support requests, do not re-use existing threads started by others, even if they are seemingly on the same subject. Ask a new question instead.

See the comment upthread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../998460?page=3#answer-582851

EDIT: Please note that any further off-topic threads regarding Australis' development may be closed as this is not the correct place for feedback. The Mozilla approved way is to use the Input site. You may also want to take it over this forum and consider several different alternatives. You could consider the developers mailing list

    https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/firefox-dev

Or to an alternate discussion forum such as

Among other problems in FF 29 is the ugly increased space between icons for add-ons on the main Toolbar. My URL window could be 50% bigger if the old, tight spacing had been left alone. Who thought more wasted space was good? And why can't I have some icons along the bottom like before? And now some of my useful add-ons have no icons at all - they are not available anymore. What is going on? Who asked for these changes? I am not a tech person, but I think Mozilla's #1 focus should be security and #2 should be smooth, resource-light responsiveness. I think these goals are no longer at the top.

As the originator of this thread, I do not think it should be closed, for the simple reason that I have not yet had my questions answered or the issues resolved to my satisfaction.

Yes robbyrob, I see your point.

BUT you will not get an answer you are satsfied with or resolution here.

You need to remember you are getting comments here from fellow users (myself and Moses included) and a few comments from HelpDesk staff.

This is not being seen or answered by those making decisions or involved with development or development policy. If professional paid HelpDesk staff can not get attention and replies form someone in authority you and I have no chance.

My suggestion for a way forward

If you do have unresolvable support issues, i.e problems with Firefox use apparently due to faults, but NOT those due to design changes and deliberate feature regressions.

  1. List them very briefly here, single sentence each
  2. Start a separate support question for each problem,
    • AND please ensure you includes full troubleshooting information (A green button semi automates that as you follow the prompts). This question when posted only had partial information added.
  3. Post back here to confirm you have done so.
  • We will attempt to solve the issues with you, filing bugs if necessary.
  • I or someone else will ensure this post is cross linked to your new posts.
  • With potentially the eyes of the > 1300 viewers of this thread on us we have good reason to help you solve your problems, assuming you wish to follow our advice and suggestions.

P.S.

The above applies to use of supported versions of Firefox currently Firefox 29.0.1

Firefox 28 is no longer supported or considered secure. Similar offers apply to others in this thead not just robbyrob, we are here on this forum to try to help solve support problems with use of Firefox.

You probably can not do so !

Some things may be desired but not achievable.

;-)

My best advice though is

  • For actual support problems then as my post above* we will try to help you here. (/questions/new)
  • To complain about policy on this forum contact the Forum Manager : Administrator Madasan
(Kindly note Madasan may not be around for a few days, and at the best of times we could expect to wait a few days in the queue for responses).
    • HelpDesk staff may respond before then. (Note I flagged the thread earlier *. )
  • To make a comment /complaint that contributes to aggregated / statistical information made available to developers etc use https://input.mozilla.org/feedback
  • To complain about Mozilla policy (Because Nowhere else to Complain or Discuss ; or because of the Direction of Firefox development) Consider Trying the governance mailing list.
See https://www.mozilla.org/about/forums/#governance but note that it is a moderated mailing list.
  • To discus generally try elsewhere such as

"You probably cannot do so!"

This is very disheartening. You seem to be implying that Mozilla does not care about user experience/feedback. Why, then, should I not simply 1) stop using Firefox and 2) blacklist Firefox to everyone I know?

Regarding your suggestion to list my support issues, I believe I've already done so - in the OP of this thread. To date, none of the issues/questions I've mentioned in the OP have been resolved to my satisfaction. Note: I do not consider work-arounds to be constitute satisfactory resolutions.

Moses escalated this thread some time ago. Has anyone at a higher level even taken a look at this thread as a result? I have no idea - that's never been made explicit to me one way or another. The most I've gotten in terms of a non-work-around response has been from guigs2, who pointed out that Firefox currently has issues working with Direct2D (which IMHO is ridiculous itself, but that's another story). But after I pointed out that those issues are irrelevant in my case, because I'm using Windows XP (which doesn't have Direct2D), I've been met with nothing but crickets.

I really don't see how I'm asking for too much here. Volunteers or not, I'd expect the staff in this forum to forward/escalate issues that they can't resolve to staff at Mozilla itself. If that's not the way it actually works, then I consider that to be a defect in the process. I'll also note that this very thread is the first search result when Googling "firefox 29 problems". So I'd say this thread is very visible. How can Mozilla staff not be aware of this already? If they are aware of it (as I suspect), then I'd say their silence to date is quite revealing.

more options

I went back and re-read the OP.

My "guess" is that none of your issues will be resolved. They are severe and extreme.

Unless they just happen to be resolved via later updates. (and/or you work REALLY HARD at trying to fix them)

I'm surprised Firefox v28/29 even works in Windows XP.

I hated moving away from XP, as well, but skipped crappier Vista up to Windows 7, which is a decent OS.

I'm not looking forward to Win8 (+). But you are 4 OS's back, and that's pushing it. (is XP even supported anymore?)

I'm guessing your computer is getting a little long in the tooth, and that is also probably why it's having trouble. I'm surprised it can even run modern software decently with any speed.

If you can't purchase a new computer, I suggest switching to *Pale Moon* and see if that "fixes" your problems. (it's a decent browser these days)

You could also try running Firefox Portable and see if that "fixes" your problem(s). If that does, then you probably need a new, clean profile.

You could also create a new Firefox PROFILE and see if that fixes some or all of your issues.

But you really need a new computer.

You can still try, but I doubt if you will get better advice or help than that here, or most likely anywhere. Good luck.

robbyrob,

This is very disheartening. You seem to be implying that Mozilla does not care about user experience/feedback. Why, then, should I not simply 1) stop using Firefox and 2) blacklist Firefox to everyone I know?

The answers you are looking for aren't able to be answered here. You're wanting Mozilla developers to change things in Firefox and trying to get us to do it for you. We have the same amount of power in making development decisions as you do. None.

Moses escalated this thread some time ago. Has anyone at a higher level even taken a look at this thread as a result? I have no idea - that's never been made explicit to me one way or another.

I don't think I did. I had it in my mind to do it after I replied but I never added the tag to escalate it. I'm not sure though. John, was the escalate tag added in already?

I really don't see how I'm asking for too much here. Volunteers or not, I'd expect the staff in this forum to forward/escalate issues that they can't resolve to staff at Mozilla itself.
How can Mozilla staff not be aware of this already? If they are aware of it (as I suspect), then I'd say their silence to date is quite revealing.

That's not possible. As it's been mentioned many many times before in this thread and others, developers or anyone that has authority over Firefox development changes don't answer questions here. Please note that this forum is entirely community-powered by volunteers.

I'm surprised Firefox v28/29 even works in Windows XP.

How so? XP isn't supported anymore but I suspect Firefox will continue to run on XP for more versions in the future. I know Windows 2000 stops at version 3.6.23 and version 12.

I hated moving away from XP, as well, but skipped crappier Vista up to Windows 7, which is a decent OS.

Vista was so bad. My computer came with Win8.1 and it's terrible.

I'm not looking forward to Win8 (+). But you are 4 OS's back, and that's pushing it. (is XP even supported anymore?)

Yes XP is still supported for Firefox however XP has reached EOL status and Microsoft stopped officially supporting and issueing Windows Updates on April 8, 2014. Although people still use XP on a daily basis, I strongly recommend that all users get off of XP and upgrade to a more recent OS. Windows 7 will suffice. Skip over crappy Vista..

Judging by all the issues I've been experiencing, I'm performing a rollback ver 28; it may not be as secure as the current build, but the current build seems to be completely unstable...

I recommend others do the same, if their problems didn't start until after the update.

[Status Report] After rolling back to 28b9, I am experiencing no further problems with the browser.

You know, I understand that rolling back to FF28 will mean missing out on some security fixes. But it seems to me that the Firefox developers forgot that one component of security is *AVAILABILITY*.

After coming back to three sets of "Firefox has crashed" dialogs today, I'm calling it quits. Pale Moon it is. And if that doesn't work .... Chrome? IE? [I started to download/install Opera from C-Net, but my anti-virus got upset (yeah AVG!) when the PassShow binaries were being put onto my system.]

Crashes may well not be related to using Fx29 or are you saying it does not crash in an identically configuredFx28.

Whatever happens a crash is rarely a design feature !

It is something that needs troubleshooting and Fixing. Possibly it would be a better idea to ask your own question and so start a thread about your Crash problem, something we may be able to help you fix; rather than use Fx 28.

Talking amongst yourselves in this thread is wasting everyone's time.

You need to separate in your minds the

  • Design Changes - we can not help you with that other than for instance suggesting using addons as a workaround.
  • Faults - we do want to help you with faults but in your own individual thread with full troubleshooting information. Please use /questions/new
more options

The problems I experience are not the result of persistent crashes, but Fx29 seems incapable of opening many of the websites I use regularly either with its CSS, or at all. For Fx28, one site I do use crashes regularly, but this is a Facebook game that has general trouble with handling over 1GB-worth of graphics with plugin-container; all other sites run perfectly since the rollback...

Loading any site in Fx29 takes three times longer than it needs to as well, which sounds as if URLs are going through a series of checks many dozens of times and so not being handled correctly, or Java Runtime is simply not compatible with it.

Изменено Hyncharas

more options

I will repeat, if you think you have a problem or have found a fault it would be better to start a new thread with your own question and full troubleshooting information. You will not get solutions posting in this thread.

Far from being slow Mozilla is promoting Fx29 as the fastest ever, and faster than competitors.

I am not saying that to start an off topic discussion on browser comparison, but to point out that if you have problems with Firefox being slow it is probably a problem needing a fix on your system or installation and not due to design or changes in Firefox 29.

more options

I am closing this thread now. I do not think Help Desk staff are likely to come back with any more general information or comments from Developers, but if they do they will reopen it and post as necessary.

For a summary of information and useful links relating to Fx29 issues see also I will repeat a summary I added to another long, and now closed thread.

This is a list of some things I hope will be of interest and help to readers of this thread. (Mostly courtesy of Joni the site content manager)

Known Issues

  • Privacy Master passwords & History, see under if you use sync.
  • Acesssibility issues and hard to see tabs.
Some of that may be addressed later. Some are probably remaining unanswered issues Q Good to note important addons for those needing accessibility assistance are now fixed to be Firefox 29 compatible http://www.accessfirefox.org/
  • Hangs on closedown, (see *)
This means you can not use Firefox unless you kill the Firefox process before restarting Firefox. The workaround is to set Firefox to Remember History at close down. This should be fixed in some later version possibly as soon as Firefox 30.
(A separate issue causing hangs has a work around built in to Firefox 29.0.1)
