I have read all these - no info. Catch22 - to get an email address you have to already have an email address. Mine is POP3 and won't transfer to Thunderbird

I have bought a shiny new desktop PC with Windows 8.1. It does not permit POP3 email providers. My current email provider does not support IMAP (it is a freeserve.co.uk address from orange.co.uk also known as EE). I have had my email address for 16 years and would like to keep it if possible but if it has to go then so be it. Thunderbird is recommended as a provider that enables POP3 email accounts to be set up (imported is I think the phrase but I try to avoid jargon). I followed the instructions carefully, making and correcting mistakes. I was told I had set up the POP3 account in Thunderbird retaining my old address. Yes I could send messages but could not receive. I deleted that account after a few days. So I thought I'd set up a brand new email address in Thunderbird but it seems that I can only do this if I use another email address that I might already have (such as gmail, yahoo, or live.com). I don't want to use these corporate giants. Enough of my private life goes their way already without them reading my friends/family/business correspondence. And anyway if I had (say) a gmail account why would I want or need to run it through Thunderbird. It'd work OK on its own wouldn't it? QUESTION: is it possible to start from scratch with a new email address as if this was my very first time on the internet? If so, how? And where? Thanks for any advice.

First of all you need to create an account with an email provider of your choice. Typically you'd do that via the provider's web site. Whatever provider you choose, you don't have to have another email address for that.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't continue to use your existing freeserve.co.uk address. Since you apparently deleted the account in Thunderbird, you'd need to set it up once again.

I can't tell why this didn't work initially, most likely one of your settings wasn't correct.

Follow these instructions when setting up a new account in Thunderbird.

First of all thanks for a speedy response - just a few minutes!

It seems I have a choice (and I guess I really knew this already) - make my current POP3 freeserve.co.uk account work in Thunderbird; or use a web-based provider. If I go this way then I may as well stay with orange web mail (the owner of freeserve addresses) and adjust my mailing methods to fit in with it. At least that way I can retain my old address saving me and others the admin work of a change.

Thanks for the link to the Thunderbird instructions. I had found and used these before - the help pages are quite helpful here - and will try again tomorrow evening as it is now after 10.30 pm here, and not a good time to start a careful task. Of course I have to go to the Manual Account Configuration link. I'll try some different settings this time.

Thanks again.

You probably won't find this helpful at all, but you may be interested. When my previous computer's motherboard crashed and I had to set up a new computer, I had heard so many negative reports about Windows 8 that I decided to go for Linux instead of Windows and installed Ubuntu.

Using Ubuntu proved to be very easy and Linux hasn't got Microsoft's "we know best what you want" attitude (Microsoft must have originated in the UK!) and getting TB to work was a piece of cake. It was pre-installed along with Ubuntu (as was Firefox) and after I transferred the profile files, both TB and FF worked immediately. I did not even have to go through the account set up procedure with TB. All my e-mails appeared in the Linux version after I transferred the profiles.

I shall probably not re-install Windows on the new machine as there are too many hoops to jump through with begging Microsoft to activate the new installation. On top of that, Ubuntu is very fast; where Windows took ages to boot and even more ages to shut down, Ubuntu does both operations in seconds.

Sorry to have been no help to you at all!
