I tried changing the 143 to 993 and the 1025 to 465 but that did not result in a fix. The pert terminology is confusing.

Ok, I attempted to check out the account settings and the attached screenshot shows what may work. Please compare this to your incoming settings and your smtp settings. I'm not saying this will work, but it is at least something that thunderbird found. The incoming server was port 143 STARTTLS and the smtp server was 1025 and STARTTLS. See if that works and report back any error message.
