I am very frustrated with the latest edition of Thunderbird. It has stopped receiving and sending emails.

Here is the situation: iMac, late 2012 (yeah, it's old ... but it works), OS 10.15.7. Thunderbird, 78.10.1. NortonLifeLock / Norton Security 8.6.3, build 61. Earthlink is my ISP for mail.

Thunderbird was receiving and sending emails, albeit sometimes slowly, until sometime May 3 when Thunderbird upgraded. Then, TB hangs in the process of connecting to the POP server. When I attempt to send email, I get the following message: "Sending of the message failed. "Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available. "The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtpauth.earthlink.net for an unknown reason. "Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."

I've double checked the settings within TB for Earthlink. I've read the connection problem / solutions. I turned off the Firewall as an experiment (still could not receive email). I started my iMac in safe mode to further test whether there was interference between Norton antivirus and TD. And, got a result. TB connected to Earthlink and received all the emails on the server; I could send email w/o error.

Given the state of maleware, etc., it's silly to run w/o antivirus.

What I think I want to do is to roll back to the previous edition of TB ... which appeared to be working. Unless, of course, a update of TB that fixes this particular issue in the near future.

So, what do I do to get myself up and running again?

I'm adding to my post in hope that someone will respond. This problem persists ... except for one time a week ago when all of the email accumulated to that point downloaded. And, then TB went back to refusing to download any emails. At this point there are 100s of email stacked up.

I've read the TB 78 FAQ. I've double checked the account settings with Earthlink support to ensure that they are correct. While I don't know what connection security Earthlink uses, I've tried connection security, set to NONE, set to STARTTLS, and set to SSL/TLS. No downloads regardless of setting. I've also used the config editor to set security.tls.version.min to 1. Again, no downloads.

I've read the "See also" in the sidebar. Nothing seems to be relevant.

This is another post in my saga ... The story get more strange.

The TB 78 FAQ suggested that allowing TB to access the internet thru the Firewall might resolve the problem of not receiving / sending emails. Since I did not have Norton Firewall blocking / allowing specific applications, I had not done this step.

I decided to try it. I turned on Firewall application blocking in Norton (the Apple Firewall is now turned off) and placed TB in the list of allowed applications. Shutdown / restarted my computer. And, it worked. The 100s of emails held by my ISP flooded down into TB.

TB continued to send / receive emails for two days.

I shutdown my computer yesterday about midnight. When I restarted it this morning, TB will not download emails. I'm back to where I was three days ago, with the added nuisance of trying to determine whether an application should be allowed access to the internet or blocked by Norton whenever I start an application that Norton hasn't seen yet.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Try uninstalling the Norton product and see if the issues disappear. I have a suspicion they will.
