When I opened Thunderbird this morning, it would not download any email. When I clicked on "get messages", it connected to the pop server, but nothing happened. No message saying that there were no new messages.
Tell me how to fix the problem.

If you are using ESET/NOD32 security/AV then probability is very high it is causing your problems. thanks, I suspected it was something like that. as I mentioned, I'm not fluent in IT. what is SSL?
The suggestion solved my problem for one day. Now "search" does not work and "get messages" also is AWOL.

Yes I found disabling SSL under account then server settings (security). I had to choose none option for Thunderbird to download mail
