The amount of space that the server makes available to you has nothing to do with Thunderbird. The company that offers you server space may also be providing your internet and perhaps the email address as well or maybe it is a free email address with someone like Google.

Imap accounts mean emails are stored on server and the imap account in Thunderbird offers you a view of what is held on server. The company who owns the server will offer you a quota of space on the server for your emails.

It would seem that you have a lot of emails on the server, perhaps you still have old emails that you could delete to gain space. A good option would be to check settings to make sure you are able to synchronise folders and download full copies .

Then you could copy them into the 'Local Folders' mail account, so you have a copy that is not on the server. This would allow you to delete emails off the server and gain some space.

Have you compacted your folders to fully remove old marked as deleted but hidden emails ? If no, then you need to do it. Right click on Inbox folder and select 'Compact. Repeat for each folder. This is especially important for Inbox, Drafts, and Junk because they get the most activity. Compacting is important and helps to maintain folders.

Some servers may increase the quota size if asked, but may charge you for providing it. It is best to manage this yourself by getting copies into Local Folders and removing emails off server.

The worst situation is when you reach the maximim quota - it gets full, then the server cannot accept any more emails until some are deleted. This means someone might send an email and the email gets bounced back with a failure to deliver notice.

If you are using 32 bit Thunderbird, you have a 4 Gigabyte limit size to each email ACCOUNT, not each folder within the email account. This is an unchangeable limit in the 32 bit version, you could try installing the 64 bit version if you have a 64 bit operating system.

Single click on your inbox, click right button. Choose folder properties. Then click on the quota tab. If you see something like 1315172 of 3145728 KB used you have hit this limit.

You can then delete old sent emails or upgrade to the 64 bit version.

OR your email provide might also have a lower restrict as a previous reply as mentiond

re :you have a 4 Gigabyte limit size to each email ACCOUNT

John443 - I think that is wrong information.

Gmail offer a quota of 15GB for the account and so do whomever you use. You already are easilly handling well over 5GB, but as I said, it is the server you dictates the quota size.

Imap accounts limit per account is set by the server. Pop accounts have a limit on what can be left on server which is usually less than allowed for imap accounts. However, pop accounts are designed to store emails on computer. In the case of Thunderbird, you can have as many folder as you want. That also goes for the 'Local Folders' mail account. The limit is really based on what space you have on the computer /disk.

Back in version 52: There was a change: Folders backed by mbox storage larger than 4GB are supported without warning (unless preference mailnews.allowMboxOver4GB is set to false).

In an account, you may see a folder called Inbox. In Thunderbird that 'Inbox' folder is really a 'File'; an mbox text file. it is important to note that an mbox file is a text file and it would be risky to allow any single document containing so many emails to get to such large sizes that would make it difficult to access via a Text Editor program. So it is best to create more folders and organise emails into sub categories to reduce stored file size. Not because the files cannot be larger but because it is more risky.

It is also worth noting from a computer space point of view, that when a folder needs compacting, a copy is created of the file during the compacting, so sufficient space is required on the disk.

Thunderbird had all size restrictions on folders removed years ago. There has never been a per account limit as Thunderbird stored mails in a file per folder system. There is a limit of 4Gb set by the FAT32 file system, so a 4Gb limit is possible per folder if you are using a older operating system or a USB drive with the FAT32 file system (most of them when you buy them).

These limits are not new and are inherent in the operating system, not the applications that run on it. and are unlikely to impact a normal user with a profile located on the system disk.

I have the same problem. I am French and the English language is not a problem for me but computer language is. I don't understand words such as byts, IMAP, server etc. In other words there's an alert saying the quota is 79% and I don't want to lose my messages. What do I do?

marietheschaffter re :I don't understand words such as byts, IMAP, server etc. Then I suggest you become more informed as it will give you greater understanding when people post comments advising on what to do. You do not need to a computer guru nor get really technical, but it certainly helps to gave a grasp of some terminology. So in really basic and somewhat simplified terms: bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes etc. This is scale of measurement and means of how much size and space is taken up. When you get an email address with eg: internet service provider or a free one with eg: gmail, emails sent to you are received by that company and stored on a computer with massive hardrive space. That is refered to as the server. Those companies allow you access to see those emails sent to your email address. This can be done directly by logging on using a username (usually email address) and a specific password, to that company's website using a browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge; this is called logging on to your webmail account. You can also get access to your emails by using an Email Client program such as Mozilla Thunderbird, which is a program running on your computer. There are two methods your can use to get access to emails, POP and IMAP. Please read:

re :there's an alert saying the quota is 79% and I don't want to lose my messages. What do I do? Read the English part of the comment that has been selected as 'Chosen Solution'.

I have fully explained what the quota is refering to as allowed storage on the server for imap mail accounts. The number 79% refers to how much space you have used where 100% is the maximum allowed.

Use the link I provided in the 'Chosen Solution' to ensure you have the correct setup to be able to perform a download synchronisation of all emails in all folders so you have full copies downloaded. Then in Offline mode (internet connectivity is stopped/paused from a Thunderbird point of view) get copies of those downloaded emails in the imap account folders into 'Local Folders' mail account where you will have previously created suitable folder names ready to receive emails for storage. Once you have copies in 'Local Folders' mail account then those emails are independent of the server and are stored on your computer. Then you can go back to online mode and delete the copies in the imap account folder to delete them off the server. Finally, compact the imap folders to fully remove marked as deleted emails.

I was having the same issue with mailbox full using thunderbird the problem wasnt Thunderbird.I have a gmail account and google only allows 15GB of free storage on google drive and pictures and emails so I was having my phone backups go to my google drive without deleting older backups eventually my google drive filled up to max limit and that is why thunderbird was saying my mailbox was full. So I deleted my older phone backups in my google drive account and that made room in my email folder and solved the problem. Try removing some items from your storage drive and see if that makes room in your mail folder

Quota - Googles 15gb. shown in the picture ALL IMAP accounts have a quota, what it is can only be explained by the provider as they set the limit and Thunderbird reports the situation when the provider offers notification.

In all cases where quota usage is mentioned and you will not delete mail talk to the mail provider. (Google Yahoo or whom ever has their name after the @ on your email address is usually your mail provider.)
