The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com timed out.

Hi, I have Thunderbird 68.5.0 installed on a windows 10 laptop. I get the above error when trying to send mail through gmail and/or yahoo.

I have tried the following: 1. Unchecking the "check outgoing emails SMTP" in avast anti virus 2. Increasing the value of “mailnews.tcptimeout” to 2000 3. turn Oauth2 on both incoming and outgoing servers 4. Delete all my passwords and sign in again 5. delete cache under settings:advanced:network & disk space 6. removing accounts and adding them again

And nothing seems to work. Screenshot of the error message and the incoming and outgoing server settings are attached.

I would really appreciate any help from the community!

If it failed after adding the gmail account with default settings to a completely new profile, I can only suggest there's something besides TB causing the blockage. Are you using a VPN? Can you receive mail but not send?

I would run Windows in safe mode to test if any startup apps are interfering. Even if Avast is set to not scan outgoing mail, it may still be scanning the secure connection and blocking sending.

Note that as of TB 68.5, OAuth is supported for both IMAP and POP accounts with gmail and Yahoo. Your IMAP settings for gmail look OK.

Thanks sfhowes!

I've just tried it and it didn't solve the error. I've set windows to safe mode with networking (option 5), sent an email and got the same error message.

I don't know if it is related, but when I look in my saved passwords, I can't seem to find one for outgoing SMTP. In this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1244218 They say it would only be added once the first contact with the server.

It all worked fine until a couple of days ago. I would really appreciate any additional advice.

Edit: I've tried uninstalling thunderbird, deleting all profile information, reboot machine, reinstall thunderbird , add a single account and send an email and I still get the same error. I have no idea what to do next

Thanks sfjowes! it worked. Seems like I can send emails through Wi-Fi, but not when connecting directly to the network with a cable. Seems like my organization is using some sort of VPN setting behind the scenes for protection.

Thanks so much for your help!
