Hi, was this the kind of Windows 10 system reset that moves some application data to a

C:\Windows.old

folder, or did the data stay in place -- Thunderbird automatically found it after reinstallation?

Either way, the password for your email account that Thunderbird needs to receive and send mail on that account should be the same password you would use to check your email using a webmail page on your email provider's website.

Thank you jscher2000, unfortunately Thunderbird do not automatically found the e-mailhistory or load the new e-mail.

I open every day my mail without using any password.

Problem not solveld.

Hi John, Thunderbird doesn't find your old mail folders?

In that case, can you find a folder named

C:\Windows.old

on your system? If so, turn on viewing of hidden files and folders:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

Then explore up this path:

C:\Windows.old\Users\Windows-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird

Do you have that folder?

Thanks for you support, but the problem is not solved. The path C:\Windows.old\Users\Windows-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird I can't find. Not on the C drive, not on the D drive.

Do you have a

C:\Windows.old

folder at all?

If you do not have that folder, do you have any backups of your system from before the data loss?

If you do not have any old data, then you'll need to figure out your email account password and start a new set of folders.

Since you mentioned a D drive, did you ever store Thunderbird data there?

Thank you! It's clear there is no protocol for lost passwords when you mean you'll need tot figure out your email account password.

Yes, if you are setting up Thunderbird from scratch, then the problem isn't that you lost a password for Thunderbird (such as the "Master Password"). Instead, you need to enter the password for your email account. If you need to reset that, the procedure would be whatever was set by your email service provider.

(Master Password feature in case you're curious: Protect your Thunderbird passwords with a Primary Password. That's a password you definitely don't want to lose!)

This is ridiculous. When windows updates my computer whenever they damn well please, I spend days trying to get back what they dump. My husband died and I am only able to respond to email sent to him via his phone because he has NO email account with Thunderbird since I don't have his password. I am trying to avoid that in advance for my account and no I see I have NO way to keep the account? What the..??

Hi marytspecs, Thunderbird is a program to access mail accounts. Your husband did not have an account with Thunderbird because Thunderbird doesn't give out email accounts. Are you able to open Thunderbird and view old mail that was saved on the computer previously, or is that no longer visible after the last Windows update?

more options

No. Thunderbird totally is gone from my husband's computer. When I try to put it back on, I have to open "an existing account" but I don't have the password to do it. The more important one is mine. After I system restored my computer I now have Thunderbird but I know from experience that Windows will update again soon and I will lose Thunderbird. I want to know how to avoid this.

Hi marytspecs, back up the data in the Thunderbird data folder in case you need to restore it in the future without using system restore.
