I have just performed a clean install of OSX 10.12.6 then a new install of Thunderbird 60.3.2. By using a profile I have stored on a stick and pointing Thunderbird to it, I have full access to all my old mails and my five email accounts but I cannot send or recieve mails. Thunderbird is continually asking for passwords even when I check the box to store them in password manager. When I check the password manager, it is empty. I have also tried changing the authentication method to 'normal password'. I have only managed to, very briefly, get access to two of my three gmail accounts by adjusting the access to 'Less Secure Apps' within Gmail. Thunderbird did download mail. Now though, I am back to square one, I cannot send or receive, and I have no idea why it didn't work with the third account. One forum suggested the removal of the key3.db file in the profiles folder but this had no effect.

I've been trying to solve this for hours now.

Can anyone assist?

No. No master password has been set.

No master password has been set.

Then I don't know where the log entry comes from.

I have nothing else to suggest than creating a new profile using profile manager. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/using-multiple-profiles

Start Thunderbird with the new profile also using profile manager. Then set up one of your Gmail accounts in the new profile as a test.

No I did not set a master password. I assume that's not my OS password.

Well that's the most progress we've made. Fantastic. Thankyou. So by setting up a new profile we have proved that there was nothing wrong with any of the servers as all are currently downloading all of my stored mail. So the simplest thing to do I guess would be to load this new profile onto my stick so that I can migrate between my work and home computers. The only annoying glitch here, assuming that the above works, is that I had been extensively using tags in Thunderbird to sort all of my mail by subject. Is there any way of combining the two profiles in order to transfer all of this?

This article has instructions for how to manually transfer data between profiles. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Thunderbird

Wrt tags, this article may help. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Tags

One more thing you could try on the old profile is the procedure to remove or reset the master password. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password#Removing_your_master_password

Thanks for that. Thunderbird is still busy downloading all the mail from the servers. I shall try the tag migration once this is complete. I'll also have a look at the master password thing although this still confuses me a little as I have never set one, can Thunderbird mistakenly think that I have? Anyway, I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

I just deleted the prefs.js file in my new profile and replaced it with the one from the old profile. That seems to have migrated the tags, fantastic. Thankyou very much. There was an add on called mailtweak mentioned to perform this job but it no longer works with this version of Thunderbird. One question remains though. My old profile, with all of it's stored messages, was 13.42Gb. The new one, after all messages have been downloaded, was only around 7Gb but now I have performed this swap, the size has spiked up to 18.75Gb. Have I just done something which can cause major problems? Does that prefs.js file bring in files from my old profiles folder?

No. The size of the downloaded mail files should match the size used on the server.
