Quick filter on body not working

Using Thunderbird 52.5.2 on macOS 10.13.2, using the Quick Filter to filter messages based on Body content rarely works.

For example, in a not very large folder (36 messages) I have 8 messages which start with the word "Dear". Four are plain text and 4 are HTML formatted. Typing "Dear" into the Quick Filter box and setting "Filter messages by:" to be "Body" only, only 2 of the 8 messages are listed (one plain text and one HTML formatted).

What could be going wrong?
