Thunderbird updated and I cannot download emails. Previously I got a pop-up into which to type my password each time I login and it solved the problem.

I used to use Eudora and then moved over with Eudora settings to Thunderbird. It seems to be a problem that occurs when Thunderbird updates and I presume the password is not set to my server. Somehow I managed to get a popup to complete with my password whenever I went online and this solved the problem - I received emails. I would appreciate help in getting that pop-up back as the setting do not seem to work and send the password without.

Hi Michal,

Thank you. That has cured the problem. You are an absolute star. Most grateful. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to answer.

Also for the phrase 'hamburger' button. That is a new one to me.

Hi raytay.

Do you see any error message when starting Thunderbird? What mail protocol do you use (IMAP or POP3)?

Hi Michal,

Thanks for replying. No, I do not receive any error message. Thunderbird tells me it is connecting as usual to download emails from the server and then this message disappears and no messages have been dowloaded.

I am using POP3. IMAP is not an option from my email provider for the account I am using.

I asked my email provider for assistance too and they tried to replicate the problem on their test Thunderbird and could not help. Just suggested checking settings which I had already done.

However, since posting my original query I have found that I can still send emails from Thunderbird although I get a popup requiring me to enter my password. If I could get to the same position with receiving emails I would be delighted.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi raytay.

This looks promising - you can delete the password currently stored in Thunderbird following these steps:

  1. Open the Options from the main menu Tools > Options. If you do not see the main menu, you can use the three lines "hamburger" button at the top right.
  2. Go to Security > Saved Passwords and click the Saved Passwords… button.
  3. Now you can locate the passwords stored for your account and delete them.
  4. Restart Thunderbird and once it tries to connect to the mail server for incoming/outgoing mail, a dialog window asking for the new password should appear.
