I am a retired computer engineer and I am using a custom built Intel I5 desktop initially installed with Windows 7 Professional and recently attempted to install the free upgrade to windows 10 which I downloaded to a DVD .iso file for the upgrade. The Windows 10 upgrade failed to run and kept restarting itself, no suggested fix worked. So I reinstalled the original windows 7 Pro OS and reinstalled my various other applications. The one now in question is the Thunderbird email handler. After running over two weeks with the reinstallation of Windows 7 Pro and without any problem with my Thunderbird email handler, yesterday 4/8/2016 I merely checked some settings in my Thunderbird email handler, and after that I somehow lost emails prior to 4/7/2016 in my inbox folder. I did not make any settings changes that I was aware of.

My ISP provider (Earthlink) could not help me with obtaining the lost emails that were in my inbox.

Can anyone know where I might look to restore those lost inbox emails that apparently are no longer on the ISP mail server but might still be available somewhere in a FOLDER/FILE stored on my PC?

Some of your replies helped. However I finally got the help and fix I needed from my ISP provider (EarthLink). They directed me to the "Account Settings' and under 'Server Settings' for the POP Mail Server on my laptop I unchecked the box for "For at most' under the checked 'Leave messages on server' line which apparently was left checked upon the reinstallation of the Thunderbird mail client. So with that change I am back to my normal operation. Thank you for your time and efforts

christ1: your reply only answered part of my problem as to where the folders/files were. My real problem is how come Thunderbird caused my emails to go missing or deleted when I did not click on any delete key?

The article does not necessarily have instructions to restore any lost messages. It primarily helps you to determine what caused the problem. The most likely cause for lost messages is anti-virus software corrupting Thunderbird mail files and hence causing data loss.

See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues for possible clues.
