All of our Thunderbird email accounts have stopped working today. We're suddenly getting the error, "Sending of password for user xxxxx did not succeed.

This morning when my SO & I tried to access e-mail we each got the above message, ending with Mail server mail.xxxx.org responded: Authentication failed. I've been studying the Web this morning, and have found a number of similar cases, but none matches ours.

1. I can log into our mail server through cpanel and Horde. 2. I can see gmail messages I've sent to one of our accounts through Horde. 3. This problem applies to all email accounts associated with our four domain names. 4. We've spoken with our ISP and they claim they've made no changes that would require any new Thunderbird configuration data. 5. We have made no conscious changes to Thunderbird since the last time (yesterday evening) we used it. 6. We are not using anything related to AOL, HotMail, Yahoo, etc., although one of us does have a Verizon email account.

We're stumped. We'll welcome any and all theories and solutions. Thank you in advance.

This was of no value at all.

I thought--and perhaps I'm wrong--I was quite clear that neither we nor our ISP have made any changes to Thunderbird's configuration. I began by saying that this happened suddenly...that it was working yesterday evening. I said in two different contexts that I was able to get on our mailserver through cPanel and Horde. Also that we can forward email from our ISP accounts to Verizon and GMail.

How could I have been more clear? This has been a frustrating day both with Thunderbird and our ISP. Please don't pile on irrelevant information about our problem.

lets go back to basics....

Turn everything off. Computers modems routers. Everything. At the power point... pull batteries from laptops, and leave that way for several minutes and then restart. 2 or 3 minutes of no access to power is required to actually deplete capacitors and actually cold start devices. Nothing to say the gremlins are not at work. This kills them off.

Next, are you both using the same device? Same user account in the operating system? The forum reports your using windows XP, is that correct? What service pack? What is the domain/s... It is hard to check for configuration without it. Last one the guy had no MX record, because his new plan had no mail server. So I do like to check everything. What does your ISP have to do with your domain? are they a reseller, host or what?
