I have 2 outlook accounts set up in Thunderbird: 1. My personal email account ending in @hotmail.com 2. My work microsoft exhange / outlook account.

I can receive emails from both accounts fine. When sending emails I can choose to send from my work account in the drop down, however all emails are actually being sent by the personal hotmail account.

Similar problems other users have had that don't relate to hotmail include:

Could you please offer any advice on how to fix this?

Best,

Paul

This sounds like you only have one smtp outlook server which both accounts are using when sending.

As each outgoing server will have an email address as User Name, it sounds like you are using the Personal hotmail account User Name for both.

check you have two outgoing servers. Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Check which one is using which email address. If you already have two correct SMTP server listed and each one has correct UserName email address, then check to see what Outgoing Server the accounts are using.

  • Tools > Account Settings
  • select the account name
  • look bottom right Outgoing server (SMTP) and click on drop down selection to choose correct server.
  • click on OK to save changes.

Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) If you only have one Outgoing Server (SMTP) create another Outgoing Server (SMTP), but this time set the correct User Name email address.

  • click on 'Add' button
  • Description : type something to clearly identify the server like 'Business'.
  • User Name needs the full email address of the account.
  • server Settings will probably be the same.
  • click on OK to create the server.

Then make sure the account is actually using that server. click on OK to save changes.

That was a helpful reply, thank you. I could see that the personal account was set to be the default outgoing server. Changing this to my work Microsoft exchange account got the error 'Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server exchange.mse2010.com timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.' Changing my outgoing mail settings for exchange.mse2010.com didn't help.

Looking into this a bit more I can see that people use the 'ExQuilla for Microsoft Exchange' Thunderbird extension to get Thunderbird working with Microsoft Exchange. Can anyone confirm whether Thunderbird can send emails through Microsoft Exchange without ExQuilla?

General advice: http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/thunderbird-and-exchange-owa.html

ExtendedMAPI uses MAPI as a actual messaging engine. It is used by Outlook to make native calls to the Microsoft Exchange server. Outlook Express and Thunderbird don't support Extended MAPI. The normal way to use Thunderbird with a Microsoft Exchange Server requires the admin to enable the POP/IMAP/SMTP mail servers that are bundled with that server.

So first find out if IMAP and SMTP mail servers have been enabled. If they have been enabled and if you are connecting using IMAP and can access emails, then check the SMTP details to see if they are correct. Username = OWA login details
