Thunderbird takes 30 seconds to startup with Unresponsive Script citing mailWindow.js. 6-8 IMAP accounts, mainly gmail. SOLVED by updating to 38.1.0

I have Thunderbird 31.1.2, on my Windows 8.1. I have about 6-8 IMAP accounts, mainly from gmail.

Thunderbird has always opened within a second or 2 when I click on it. Then all of a sudden it started taking 30 seconds to open. The main toolbar at the top will appear, with the folders on the left. The main viewing window stays blank and Thunderbird remain unresponsive for 30 seconds. Then everything loads fine.

I couldn't bother to figure out the problem so I lived with it for a few months. Now the same thing has happened with my Thunderbird on my Windows 7 installation, opening the same IMAP accounts. Just that the Windows 7 installation gives this error after the 30 seconds:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js:174"

So now that I have 2 Thunderbirds taking so long to open, I have to find a solution. Can anyone assist? Thanks

You said moving would be a time-consuming last resort. How about using a filter to move all emails out of inbox to a local folder Set filter to move mails IF they are older than 1460 /1080 / 715 /365 days. just change days (and local folder if you want to group them), run manually and compact in-between.

I also hope you delete them from server when you delete them. (account-setup) Otherwise your Gmail/all account is full.

silly SUMO, I missed your reply of April 7 where you tried 38.0b1.

So, if you can hang in there with not changing your setup, it would be good if we could try other things to identify the source of the problem and not paper over it by deleting messages and such.

If startup time consistenly good if you start thunderbird from Windows command line as the following?

 thunderbird.exe -offline

Wayne, I started thunderbird 38.0b1 using the command line: thunderbird -offline a few times and it opened instantly each and every time.

This was on my Windows 8.1.

Sorry for the gap in time - lost track after we started getting 38 in shape for release. Do you still see thie problem? If you do, then we can move on to a next step.

OP, docarchy, wrote me "I just got notified of version 38.1.0 and installed it. I am not experiencing the 30 second delays anymore. I have tried multiple times of opening and closing and all seems zippy.

This is on my windows 8.1. Will update on my windows 7 and test later, but I was a little too happy to do anything else. Just wanted to tell you right away.
