After opening 4 or 5 web pages I can open no more and I have to restart to continue. I have tried clearing the cache and that didn't work. I also set it to clear the cache when I close the program. That didn't help either. I have used Firefox for years without problems. How can I go back to normal function?

Dropa, thanks for your question. It is multiple browser windows. For example I just tried to do something on my electric utility website. I use LastPass to manage my passwords so I opened LasgtPass and logged in (1st browser window). I searched for the utility on Google (2nd browser window), then clicked to go to the utility website (3rd browser window), Clicked to log in and opened the login window (4th window), clicked to open my utility account settings and got the little dots that show Firefox is searching for the 5th browser window and not finding it. At this point my only option is to close Firefox and start again.

My wife is going to get in her car and drive to the utility office!

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

cor-el,

When I tried troubleshoot mode the problem persisted - I was unable to open more than 4 or 5 browser windows. When I used Safe Mode with network support I could start Firefox, but couldn't open any browser windows.

Cor-El,

I have noticed that the problem is resolved. I followed your suggestions and didn't think anything had improved, but now it seems to be working well. I don't know why. Maybe I just needed to reboot a couple of times. Anyway, Firefox seems to be working correctly now and I wanted to thank you for your help.

The same problem has returned. I will try the instructions you already provided to see if that helps. If not I'm going to try MS Edge and see if it works any better. I really don't want to go back to Edge.

Everything I tried failed so I uninstalled Firefox, rebooted my pc and started over. It seems to be working - for now.
