when i shut down firefox afterwards when i start it agfain it says that it is still wporking and i have to clos down my computer before being able to start firefox again. that is a problem!

Just posted exactly the same question! I knew the kill process solution existed and have been doing so, but feel that with supposedly one of the top 3 browsers that this should not be necessary. For example would the same happen in IE or chrome. Was hoping for a more permanent fix. Does it relate at all to my choice of homepage bbc.co.uk? Is there too much Java/Javascript on this page, but even if so would these other browsers react the same way. The smart answer of why not try is fine, but I dont want to I want to continue with Firefox.

You should be able to kill the firefox process e.g. with task manager, so do not need to restart the computer.

Usually, firefox takes a few seconds to completely shutdown itself, after you click the close button. But if you are seeing this problem and you are sure you waited long enough for it, the go to Task Manager -> Processes and find "firefox.exe", right click on it, and end process tree. That should solve your problem. :) You need not restart your computer for that!
hi John and Mananthaprabhu, it happens always when i need java. than it happens that firefox doesn't start uop anymore. that is the problem. how to 'repair' that. i already renewed java but that was n't the solution. yhanks anyway for the hints. frans
I wonder what you mean by "it happens always when i need java"
Note for instance that use of Firefox often does not even need Java installed, JavaScript is something different.
Have you tried killing the Firefox process as suggested, does that help in that it should then allow you to re-start Firefox, without needing to re-start the computer.
now it works again. don't know why. it was when i used this site http://www.osho.nl/Osho%20Zen%20Tarot/zentarot/ and when you get on the next page the picture, it needs java to show it. afterwards i couldn't start firefox anymore but today it worked again normally. a miracle :-)) thanks anyway and have a goor time!!

In case you have such problems again note sometimes such problems are specific to a single tab or site and it may help if clear the cookies of that site, & or clear the browser cache.

I went through the FF diagnostic suggestions and disabled all add-ons, then re-enabled them one by one. I found the only extension that caused this problem was the Symantec IPS 3.2 extension that installs with Norton Security Suite 5.1.0.29. When disabled, no problem, when enabled FF does not close down correctly and I get this error. I have a message in to Symantec.
