I am having an issue where it looks like FireFox (55.0.3 (32-bit)) is crashing on sites that have animations or videos. I have turned off hardware acceleration and tried to figure out the issue, but have not had any success. I have attached a screen shot of my submitted crash details. The same sites that are causing the issues are working fine in IE and Chrome. Can you please provide me with some assistance?

Thank you,

Luis Duran

Firefox v55 has been having problems with graphics drivers and protection programs.

Check out Firefox v56 beta, some of the issues with Intel drivers have been fixed. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/beta/all/

Any help would be appreciated. I am still dealing with this and would hate to stop using Firefox as I have been using it for a decade.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

The issue is not present in safe mode. I just tried several sites that always cause it crash and it seems fine. I also tried with Private mode and no issues were encountered. Could it be an add-on? I have attached the list of add-ons currently installed.

Thank you,

Luis Duran

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Thank you.

I actually turned off Hardware Acceleration when I first started troubleshooting. I just checked and it is still turned off.

It may be one of your add-ons. Disable one then the other.

more options

I only had two add-ons. One from Mozilla to force the crash and one to add a home page on open instead of the generic tab that always came up. I disabled that and the crashes stopped. Was working fine until two weeks ago. Thanks to all who provided me with assistance. I really appreciate your time.

Well, I spoke too soon. It started crashing again. I have disabled all add-ons and it is still crashing.

So far, so good with v56 beta. I kept a log of the sites that would cause it to crash and they seem to be fine so far. I will try it for a day or two and post my results back.

Thank you!
