I have a new computer windows 7 x64 and firefox is running slow and keeps going into not resonding

I am having alot of problems with my internet I am using the newest vs of firefox and running windows 7 x64 brand new computer. I keep getting not responding, & server is taking too long and server can't connect. I thing my setting must be set wrong can you help me fix this problem. Do I need a proxy to run firefox. I have tried it with and without. No change in my internet.
