firefox web browser not starting, always intstalling updates but failed

Recently I have problem in launching the Firefox browser (version 3.6.8). Whenever I clicked the Firefox browser icon, it started to install Firefox updates and then an alert dialog box appeared saying:

" Installing Firebox update : Software Update failed. The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again".

The point was that I just started my computer and there were absolutely no other copies of Firefox running on my computer. This phenomenon happened every time when I tried to use the Firefox browser, can anybody out there be kind enough to help? Thank you very much in advance!
