Without visiting a web page where i have a stored login i get prompted to enter my master password seemingly randomly. I don't know what is causing this. I can have tabs open and then later suddenly i get prompted for the password. What should i do to reset the system and eliminate this problem? I read in one article that sync will prompt for passwords so i unchecked sync passwords but the problem persists.

Solely using Sync is sufficient to get a master password prompt when you aren't connected to Sync yet in the current session and Sync wants to contact the Sync server because the Sync credentials are stored in the Password Manager. It doesn't matter whether you sync passwords or do not sync passwords.

Current Firefox releases include sub domains as a suggestion in the drop-down list. If you have a lot of passwords then this can take some time to process and build the list. You can set this pref to false on the about:config page to see if that has effect.

  • signon.includeOtherSubdomainsInLookup = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
