I can receive email on thunderbird, but when i hit reply, all i get is the message to reply to. there is no tool bar that lets me send, add an attachment, etc. Where has it gone?

You need to have a Write window open when you do the above suggestion. If you are also missing the Menu Bar with View on it, press alt or F10 to make it appear and then select View-Toolbars
