When I used to open up a new tab I would get my bookmarks displayed to select, this no longer happens, how do I get it back ?

You should be able to open your bookmarks in the sidebar by presssing CTRL+I
If it doesn't work, try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.
New tabs open by default a new blank tab. If you previously had a specific page opened then that feature has been added by an extension that is either disabled or no longer working.
