How do I set-up a printer?
I just want a short step-by-step to install my printer, a e3pson Workforce 610.

If you have the installation CD that came with the printer, all you should have to do is insert the CD in your CD drive. It will automatically start the install process and all you have to do is follow the instructions on the screen. You do not have to do anything with FF as this is a Windows process and not a FF process.
If you don't have the install CD, go to Epson's support page and you should be able to download the install file from there. Download and then execute the file (double-click on it). Then again, follow the instructions.
Nothing special as far as Firefox is concerned except to select that printer the first time you want to use it in Firefox; it doesn't become the default in Firefox until you select it.
If he had two or more printers that would be the case. The way he worded his question though makes me think he is a novice user. Hence, when he does perform the install the software will automatically make the Epson his default printer system-wide.
Yes, but doesn't WinXP come with the "XPS printer" which would save to a file?
From other printer support questions with Firefox that I have seen here and at MozillaZine, it seems that on WinXP Firefox would default to that XPS printer.
With all of the systems I've worked with, the latest printer installed is usually made the system default printer. I may be wrong but that is what I've seen with all of the Windows versions. At one time (long, long ago) you were asked during installation if you wanted the new printer to be the default.

Firefox doesn't use the "system default printer" as its' default. Many users feel that isn't proper, the "system default" should be the "default" for all programs; it has always been that way with Firefox - right or wrong.
Usually doesn't make much difference on a single PC with multiple local printers, but when using network printers, (and maybe with a local printer connected, too), the user has to check the Printer - Name dialog for the correct printer target every time they go to print anything thru Firefox. (Royal pain in the arse if your network has many network printers, in many different locations in the building.) A network printer in use by another user / PC or a network printer that has gone into "standby" might cause Firefox to not default to the last used printer and to print to an unexpected printer (usually the first listed in that dialog box) - if you don't look at the Printer - Name box for the printer you intend the printout to go to.
Bottom line is, Firefox usually "defaults" to the last used printer, so when a new printer is installed it won't be used until it is selected and it will be used until you select a different printer.
Now you're talking networking. This doesn't sound like a network installation. I do agree with everything you said about a network install, they are a pain. You know, I wish the guy would drop another line so we could find out if the problem was resolved or not. Oh well, I'll check every so often and see what happens. Who knows, between him and you I may end up learning something new.

I've got this problem too. Since buying an HP Officejet 7000 I can no longer print from Firefox. All other programmes are OPK but in Firefox nothing happens when you click "File-Print" or "File-Print Preview". It even shows "File-Print Friendly" but again nothing happens when you click on this. Very frustrating!
