I am using office 365 and want to quit paying the fee. Thunderbird might be the answer. (1) Can both be on the computer at the same time during the change over? (2) I am using Yahoo email, as it is the first and only email I have ever used. I open it and filter out the stuff I don't want to read, then open Outlook to review and save the mail I may want to retain. Is this still possible to do? (3) By the look of the screen shots of Thunderbird it looks very much like the Outlook format, are they as similar as they look? For reference my computer started out as Window 8, then updated to 8.1, then again updated to Windows 10. I'm 73 years old and not overly savvy on these fort of things, don't want to screw things up too much while changing some of the interworkings of my computer. Any advice or constructive criticism would be appreciated. Mike Gormly

Start by installing a beta version of Thunderbird. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/

For a number of years the outlook import has been broken, but in the current beta version it is finally fixed.

Outlook MUST be installed if the import is to work, so I think that answers your questions there.

Are they similar. Yes and no. There must be a certain similarity as the things folk do with emails in an email client are much the same. Read, file search write etc. Thunderbird mail composer is more primitive than Outlooks. But it is also relatively simple if sometime clunky. The biggest thing an outlook user notices is links pasted into a message to no go blue or work until the mail is saved or sent.

Thunderbird will fetch your mail as soon as it is opened, So if you want to play in the web interface you will need Thunderbird to be closed.. Personally I do not bother with that wort of thing. I just let the mail arrive and press delete where appropriate. Or mark it as spam so the automatic spam filter learns what "I think is spam..

Matt, Thank you, I looked but didn't read in your first response. I loaded Thunderbird 52. something or other, not the BETA one. Tried that today worked quickly and easily. Address book was brought over, message were brought over, even old deleted items as well. I have a slight problem in that I have a mail folder at the top with nothing in it, below that I have Outlook import, and in that I have all that was in my old Outlook account. Is it possible that I can enter all old outlook email into the new Thunderbird email folder. So that I may be able to stream line my choices on the top of the left hand corner. Once again thank you for your help, my mistake for looking and not reading in the first place Mike Gormly
