Thunderbird 38.6.0 MacOS Yosemite 10.10.5 Pop account worked fine; now I can only download a single message at a time, whilst before all unread messages were downloaded. The server account on gmail works fine otherwise. Other imaps accounts on the same Thunderbird work fine too.

Thank you very much indeed. The suggestion in that old thread worked fine for me too.
