Hi Al,

Making Thunderbird able to send messages from your jps.net account requires clicking on a few things in Thunderbird, sharing some information that you find, and entering some new information. Do you feel capable of doing that? If not, do you have a friend or do you know a computer-savvy person or someone from your neighborhood who could follow some directions that I would provide?

Geek Squad was a good idea. Did they visit you at home or did you talk with them over the phone or did you take your computer to them? If you can involve them again, they could follow directions from me and enter the necessary information in Thunderbird. You may not want to involve them again because I cannot guarantee that my instructions will work. They have tried my suggestions already and could not get them to work.

Other possible options in San Rafael or Marin County:

  • Tech with Drake — A local, in-person tech support business serving all of Marin County. Drake explicitly offers help "figuring out email," software problems, new device setup, and one-on-one computer training on Windows, Mac, tablets, and phones. He also volunteers with seniors across Marin. Contact: phone/text (415) 763-8638
  • One-on-One Tech Help (30-min sessions) at the Civic Center Library, San Rafael. Sign up at the main desk or call (415) 473-6057.
  • Tech Help Marin (in-home or remote support; mentions “Email Problems”) — 415-891-8655
  • Computer Connection of Marin (Greenbrae) (computer sales/service; in-house technicians). — 318 Bon Air Ctr, Greenbrae, CA 94904, 415-925-0200.
  • Drop-in tech help at the Marin City library, Saturdays 12:00 - 4:00 (415) 332-6158
  • "Computer Support Marin" in San Rafael: 415-779-4220

Here's the information that you should give a helper: SMTP: smtpauth.earthlink.net (port 465 or 587, SSL/TLS, authentication required)

If that does not work, try: smtp.jps.net, port 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS), encryption SSL/TLS or STARTTLS, username is your full e-mail address, authentication is required.

Do you know your password? You may be able to log in to your account and send messages from here: https://accounts.earthlink.net/consumer-auth/oauth2/login

Your outgoing message settings are wrong and must be changed. I did not do the same thing that Geek Squad did. I gave you jps settings only in case Earthlink settings do not work. I am familiar with the history of jps.net. Sometimes when one company buys another, the original settings continue to be used.

You did not answer my questions.
