Thunderbird password

I have used Thunderbird for about twenty years. When I switch to a new computer I am always asked for a password or some other form of identity. I have no idea what that is.

I solve the problem by copying the profile from the old system, which suggests that the password/identifier must be in there somewhere. How do I find it?
