I have version 60.0. When my e-mail comes on my desktop, it is marked as read even though I have not read it. I also get mail on my iPhone but they have not been read there yet either. I've never had this problem before this version of Thunderbird.

I have seen this in some mail servers when the mail is downloaded to the phone it is marked as read and then that status is synced to Thunderbird.
