firefox starts ads while I am in another program

If I have firefox open at the home page and am in another program, firefox randomly starts up the videos that can be opened on the home page. I sometimes have to close the firefox home page to stop them when this happens. Other times the videos will run for a few seconds and stop. I only get the audio, never the video itself.
