Hi folks, For various work-related reasons I cannot upgrade right away to Firefox 28. I already have the Advanced setting for "let me choose whether to install them" set. That part is working fine.

But over the last few days, the "update available" messages have gone from being displayed once on startup, to once every few minutes. Throughout the day, when I open a new tab, or touch a link on an existing one, I get at least one pop-up window. Sometimes more. All telling me that the upgrade to 28 is of course strongly recommended.

Is there a control, setting, about:config parameter, or something I can change so that these warning and reminder messages are only done once per execution of Firefox? Or is my only choice to select "Never check for updates"?

Firefox 27.0.1 running on two Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate SP 1 machines. Problem happens on both machines, and frequency of messages seems to increase day by day.

Thanks!!

PS: the Troubleshooter and Operating System Show Data/Details bring up a copy of this note, but with details blank. But then, I have not upgraded Java to V8 yet, again, because my employers both have systems that have to stay on V7...

Maybe at work your IT department could consider supporting use of Firefox ESR then maybe you could use ESR ( Currently fx 27.4 ) for work and The Firefox release for day to day browsing.

I tend not to run recent but outdated versions and had not noticed frequent nag screens.

Things may change slightly after Firefox 29, and I have not personally tried this but there are a set of related prefs that you could try adjusting. Try for instance setting "app.update.interval" to 68000 680000 (about a week)

Sadly, as one of thousands of users, at two major universities, it's really hard to get one user's minor inconveniences to bubble up in the competition for dollars and time. Thus a local (per-user) fix is desired. I have tried your other comment, and set it to 680000 (what's a power of 10 among friends), to see what happens, and will advise. Thanks.

With thousands of users using ESR may well be sensible campus wide.

ESR is not intended for single individuals but there is nothing to stop you going it alone and installing ESR yourself, it is secure and probably will remain compatible with the University's software.

You can even run the versions simultaneously just remember then not only to use a separate profile but also to use the -no-remote argument on the ESR or whichever browser is NOT selected as the System's default browser.

Note that having outdated (blocked) plugins can also be a possible cause of alerts.

You can install a portable Firefox version to access websites that do not work with the current Firefox release.

The portable version comes with its own profile folder and doesn't interfere with the currently installed release version.
