In the last couple of weeks, Firefox has stopped working on my PC (XP Pro SP3), in that the application will not fully load (you can see where it starts to build the window, but then it stops, and is unresponsive). I have uninstalled, purged user accounts, and deleted all references to "firefox" in the registry. This started with FF13, and I tried reverting to FF5, and then FF14 when it came out, but the behavior remains the same. I have a laptop also running XP Pro SP3, but Firefox runs fine on it.

Hi,

You can consider the Reset Firefox feature via Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information. To revert to the previous profile, you can close the new profile, start Firefox and choose the *.default profile. While the Profile Manager is open, you can also delete the newly reset profile (the one containing random numbers).

Profiles Howto

If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox + its related files in all the different configuration areas/modules of the security software. Instead create new allow/trusted rules for Firefox and its related processes. Even otherwise the security software may also ask again when Firefox is started and you can try to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.
