Thank you for replying dmcritchie . The prefix in ie9 seems to be http , but in firefox there doesn't seem to be none !
This will fix what you see in the location bar, I don't know what you are copying or using to send a link in your email, but if you are copying it from the location bar and pasting into the email then that would be the problem.
http: was removed from url address in location bar (https: is left undisturbed) to repair damage -- set browser.urlbar.trimURLs to false in about:config
the above is currently listed as item #57 in
If you want to copy the information in a format of your choice, any of the following -- title, url, description, and any meta tags such as author you can do that for the current, for all, or for selected tabs, or even for the other tabs. and then paste into your email. I use the extension many times a day and it is probably involved in some manner in almost all of my replies here.

Just above the textarea that you use to enter the message text on the "Compose New Mail page" there is usually a button bar with buttons to add text formatting like Bold and Italic.
That toolbar may also have a button to turn a text link into a clickable hyperlink (look for a chain like button).
You can select the text and click that button to turn the link into a clickable hyperlink.
If you can't find the button then hover them all to check the tooltip of each (e.g. Insert hyperlink).
