I can't see any toolbars at top or bottom of screen

Use "Alt" to temporarily see toolbars at top of screen. (see item #2 in link below) Use "Ctrl+/" to toggle the Add-on' bar on or off, or to see actually see status information in on the Add-on bar install the Status-4-Evar extension (see item #10 in link below).

You can make Firefox Firefox 5.0 look like Firefox 3.6.19, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 5.0, or 4.0.1, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.

can't see any shortcuts either

Restoring "menu bar" as described above will show some of the keyboard shortcuts on your Windows XP. Windows 7 users would also have to make a change in some Windows 7 options to see the underlined letters. But to see a large list of keyboard shortcuts available see these:

I pressed F11 and they came back.

I usually do include that depending on how question is worded -- just didn't pick on on the word "any" even though I repeated the question at the top, sorry. That is is both lists of keyboard shortcuts provided. F11 toggles between Full Screen mode on/off.
