I am trying to move my Thunderbird data to a new computer. I have always been able to just copy the Thunderbird folder onto an external disk and then copy from that into the appdata\roaming folder in the new computer. I've always had a user called James to copy back into. I don't have the same username on the new computer and don't know how to get one set up. How can I put the thunderbird folder in the new default folder and get it recognized?

When you run TB on the new computer, Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Open Folder. That will open the profile folder at

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<8characters>.default

The profile will not have any accounts, but all the default files and folders will be created, and this will indicate where you should copy the Thunderbird folder from the other computer. Delete the existing, placeholder Thunderbird folder before doing the copy.

User accounts can be created by an Administrator user in Windows Settings|Accounts|Family & other users.
