iMac OS X 10.9.5 Firefox 58.0.1 Since I have installed Firefox 58, and recently 58.0.1 I have a strange prolem: When I use Firefox, after an hour or so, sometimes after a day, suddenly all my .rtf-files only open with Word ( Office 2011). Even after -the usual and wellknown actions like "Show info/Open with/change everything" etc. the problem stops a few hours, and returns. The solution I found on google: "The solution from Technical Support is to drag Com.Apple.LaunchPreferences under your Library Preferences to the trash, restart your computer, and then do an "open with" on a Word document in the Finder followed by another restart. This will permanantly fix the problem. We tried your solution first and it only worked for the one document." brought only a day or so relief. -starting Firefox in safe modus (plugins disabled) did not solve the problem -I removed Firefox completely -EMPHASIZE: this problem only occurs with using Firefox!! -There must be a relation between Firefox with Texteditor, Word, com.apple.LaunchServices.plist or whatever. -This problem does not occur in Google Chrome!

Can anybody tell me what might go on and give me the solution?

I thank you in advance!!

Hi reinaartdevos,

Since nobody has posted a reply yet (sorry about that  !) - would you please take a look at this article :

How to fix preferences that won't save

Any good  ?

Try to rename/remove handlers.json and delete mimeTypes.rdf if present in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed to reset all file actions.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Thank very very much for your advises!!!! It is rather exceptional that you are here so involved. I got even two mails to keep me up-to-date with the possible solution!! @Happy112, I had tried them already two weeks ago. Without succes. Nevertheless, thank you for your help. @cor-el, It seems till now that your advise has helped. I have been surfing now for a few hours. The problem did not occur yet. I keep Firefox active for the rest of the day, about 8 hours, and when the problem stays away, I will report that here.

As we say in our language: I shouted too early hurray.....After 5 hours Firefox in action, the problem occured again. I even re-installed the 56 version, but that didn't help either. The problem occured again. I give up..... Anyway, all of you thank you very much for your support!!!

When you click a link to a .rtf document, what happens? Do you normally get the Open/Save dialog, or do you normally have Firefox send the file to an application immediately?

Usually you can control that using the Applications list on the Preferences page. This article is about PDFs, but it's the same principle, if you can find a content type for .rtf files: View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer. If a content type isn't listed, then I think Firefox won't try to do anything automatically, but will show the Open/Save dialog (or sometimes just the Save/Cancel dialog).

Ik zeg altijd : "Ik heb te vroeg gejuicht " .....

Maar "Ik heb te vroeg 'hoera' geroepen" komt me ook bekend voor .....

@jscher 2000, I appreciate very much your try to help me. - When I want to open a ,rtf-document, I click on it, and it opens. And the Save-option works normal -I never do an action in Firefox in combination with Texteditor -I cant see anything in Preferences/Applications list which has something to do with .rtf. -This is that list: irc ircs mailto Podcast Portable Document Form Videopodcast Webfeed

You're perfectly safe here - as long as you don't post any personal information, which you haven't, so, no worries  !

Better focus on getting your problem solved  ! What's weird though : you say that this doesn't happen all the time .....

Don't give up yet - somebody's bound to come up with the perfect solution for you (fingers crossed ..... )

I wait.... And in the meantime I use Google Chrome. But I'm sure that there is a strange connection between Firefox and my system (OS X 10.9.5)

Nah, I don't think so, see :

As far as I notice, my OS X 10.9.5 is above OS X 10.8. So version above Firefox version 49 should work on my OS X 10.9.5.

You said that you've already tried everything that's mentioned in the article
in my first post, so, suggesting you'd try a Refresh would be redundant,
right  ?

more options

Yes, I also made the Refresh-action. All other actions as well. Maybe I have to wait till I upgrade my system to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). But that would imply a lot of work...

That's right - hence I posted that article, to confirm.

If you open handlers.json in a Firefox tab, are then any entries about RTF or Word?

Does this only happen when you have downloaded a RTF file in Firefox?

@cor-el, -I never download .rtf-files. -when i open the handlers.json, I get this window: defaultHandlersVersion nl 2 mimeTypes {} schemes ircs action 2 ask true handlers 0 null 1 name "Mibbit" uriTemplate "https://www.mibbit.com/?url=%s" mailto action 4 handlers 0 null 1 name "Yahoo! Mail" uriTemplate "https://compose.mail.yahoo.com/?To=%s" 2 name "Gmail" uriTemplate "https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s" irc action 2 ask true handlers 0 null 1 name "Mibbit" uriTemplate "https://www.mibbit.com/?url=%s"

I have no idea what that means!

About your link: as I mentioned before I know all the actions. to start with the ones in the link. Realy, beleive me: I have done all possible things. That is why I think that I surrender...

more options

As a Windows user, it doesn't make any sense to me that:

  • installing or running Firefox 58
  • changes the association of RTF files at the system level
  • from TextEdit to MS Word (not to Firefox)
  • when you didn't even download the files in Firefox or take other actions in Firefox related to RTF files

Have you installed any add-ons in your Firefox? If you installed any add-ons, did any of them have a so-called "native application" or second installation required?

You can view, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

Thank you again jscher2000! I did that all. I started in the so called safe mode, disabling the extensions (plugins). Without any result.
