iMac OS X 10.9.5 Firefox 58.0.1 Since I have installed Firefox 58, and recently 58.0.1 I have a strange prolem: When I use Firefox, after an hour or so, sometimes after a day, suddenly all my .rtf-files only open with Word ( Office 2011). Even after -the usual and wellknown actions like "Show info/Open with/change everything" etc. the problem stops a few hours, and returns. The solution I found on google: "The solution from Technical Support is to drag Com.Apple.LaunchPreferences under your Library Preferences to the trash, restart your computer, and then do an "open with" on a Word document in the Finder followed by another restart. This will permanantly fix the problem. We tried your solution first and it only worked for the one document." brought only a day or so relief. -starting Firefox in safe modus (plugins disabled) did not solve the problem -I removed Firefox completely -EMPHASIZE: this problem only occurs with using Firefox!! -There must be a relation between Firefox with Texteditor, Word, com.apple.LaunchServices.plist or whatever. -This problem does not occur in Google Chrome!

Can anybody tell me what might go on and give me the solution?

I thank you in advance!!

Thank you again jscher2000! I did that all. I started in the so called safe mode, disabling the extensions (plugins). Without any result.

I noticed you saying 'plugins' before - surely you meant 'extensions' only, right  ?

I'm not sure I fully understand what happens/

Where are you opening .rtf files? Is this in Firefox or is this happening when you open a .rtf file in another application or in Finder?

@Happy112, -Add-ons and Extensions are used both in Firefox(Menubar/Extras/Add-ons/Get add-ons and when you got them, they are suddenly called "Extensions". Funny, but confusing. So I regard them both as extensions or/an plug-ins.

@cor-el, -When I open a .rtf-file on my desk f.i. I notice suddenly that it wants to be opened by Word. -The icon became a Word-icon. -But the file still has the .rtf extension, not a .doc(x). That makes the problem so strange as well. -I usual open a .rtf file also f.i. from users/password folder. Is also in the navigation-column of Finder. -What resolves the problem temporarily is to select such a wrong .rtf-file with Show information/select Texteditor/Change them all, and/or Programs/Diskutilty/repair permission. -Relevant perhaps is, that I refreshed the Finder.plist as well. -The longer I contribute to my own topic, the stranger the problem becomes. But again: I can use Google Chrome as well (but it's not Firefox!).

'Add-ons' is the collective name for extensions, themes and plugins - confusing indeed, when one doesn't know  !

As this doesn't seem to be going anywhere - would you be more comfortable posting your question on the Dutch forum  ?

If so : http://www.mozbrowser.nl/forum/

@Happy112, I slowly "come at the end of my Latin" (!) I give it a try tomorrow. I made already a topic with this problem on the Dutch OneMoreThing-forum. Without result. Thank you anyway for all your efforts!

Geen wonder dat U aan het eind van Uw Latijn bent - morgen weer een dag, hoor  !

Just take a break for now, and let's give it another try tomorrow.

Everybody thanks for your advises. Not so relevant though, for other reasons as well I reïnstalled the 10.9.5 (only the system). I'm too afraid to try the Firefox again. Perhaps the problem occurs again. I now use Google Chrome from now on. So, this topic can be stopped in my opinion. Again: thanks everybody!!
