pressing down arrow opens "quick find" and inserts the number 3. pressing the left or right arrows moves the cursor properly but also inserts the number. At ti3mes the number 3 seems to 333"sel3f insert" as it is doing now as I type

Did you try to reboot the computer?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

cor-el I have solved my problem. After rebooting 2 times I started OSX in safe mode and got the same response. Upon further investigation other anomalies appeared. This lead me to believe that I was having a keyboard issue. I switched keyboards and the problem went away.

My conclusion: using the arrow keys on an Apple extended keyboard caused sufficient vibration of a stuck "3" key for the key to enter a 3. I have since "fixed" the bad keyboard by vigorously pressing the arrow and number keys.

I no longer have the problem. Thank you for your response/suggestion--seeing that both Firefox and then other Mac system apps behaved strangely even when in the safe mode quickly led me to the solution.
