upon setup the new mails appear at the bottom of the page instead the top. Also the view when opening an email is at the bottom of the screen. I would like to display them to the right 1/2 of the screen and be able to view the current email at the left.

You can sort by date by clicking on the "date" column heading button. Or in the menu, look for View|Sort By.

There are various layouts available under View|Layout, again in the menu, but I don't think the particular layout you ask for is amongst them.

There may be an add-on to do this, but it's not something I've ever tried for myself.
