progressive rollout banner The built-in VPN is being introduced through a progressive rollout, starting with Firefox version 149, for users in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States. Check here for the current list of available regionsthe US, the UK, Germany, France and Canadathe US, the UK, Germany and France. It may not be available to you yet, even if you’re in one of these locations, as this is a staged rollout that takes time to reach everyone.

If you're in a country where the built-in VPN is being introduced but do not see the built-in VPN, please note that this feature is part of an experimental study being rolled out in stages and may not have reached you yet.

You can try the following to check what may be preventing you from getting this feature:

  • In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings (or Preferences, in some cases).Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings. Click Privacy & SecurityPermissions and data on the left and go to the "Data collection and use" section. If the Allow Firefox to improve features, performance, and stability between updates setting is turned off, turn it on. See Manage remote improvements settings in Firefox.
  • Enter about:studies in the Firefox address bar to check whether you’re part of the VPN - MVP Beta Holdback study that prevents you from seeing or using the built-in VPN. See About Studies to learn more about participating in studies.
  • The built-in VPN may also be unavailable if an Enterprise policy is blocking it. You can check this by entering about:policies in the Firefox address bar to see if the IPProtectionAvailable policy is active, which can prevent availability.
  • Signing out of your Mozilla account and signing back in may also help. Before signing out, make sure you know your password and that Sync is enabled so you don’t risk losing or overwriting browser data.

Finally, when the built-in VPN is available, you should see a VPN in the top-right corner of the toolbar. Selecting it will open a prompt to turn on the VPN. If you don’t see the icon, try customizing your toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar and checking the overflow menu to add it back.
