The phone can be used without a plan, you only need a plan for data, calling and texting. You will need a microSD card so pictures taken have a place to be saved.

Im not sure about that, but you can use the firefox os simulator, which does not require a phone plan.
I ask because for $80 I might just buy one to see what it is like if I can use some features w/out a phone plan.
I appreciate that there is a simulator but holding one and using the user interface is what I really want to do.
Yes the simulator does about everything a actual phone does, hopefully you have fun with it.
You can use the camera with a SD memory inserted.
