Thunderbird mail the display pane flashes and disappears when I choose a new mail

When clicking on the message, the display pane at the right flickers and disappears, can NOT get my view pane to come up, just flashes and eventually the content goes away..... can't seem to find a fix for it. HELP, I NEED MY MAIL DESPERATELY. Note: if I choose to open the message in a new tab, that seems to work and it displays, therefore the original message is what is having the problem. Do i need a new E-mail client???
