I have just set up emails to arrange messages by Thread. It works fine …….. except - each new (later) email goes to the BOTTOM of the Thread list. I would like it to show the Thread emails in the reverse order (latest on top). Is that possible? Thanks

You will need to change this in the Config editor:

mailnews.default_sort_order: default integer 2 mailnews.default_sort_type: default integer 22

Hi and thank you for your swift reply... I did try your suggestion with some confusing results. When I create a new message & reply -thus creating a thread …… it still doesn't show the latest message on top of the list.

Are there other setting (in View) that I need to set?

Many thanks again

I don't think the answer you were given (nor any of the superuser discussion) actually affects the sorting order within threads.

I believe that by design, where possible, Thunderbird lists thread components by date, oldest first, latest last and there is no adjustment for this. Organization of threads is tricky already (by subject? by ID? by reference?) and adding date ordering on top of that might be difficult.

The attached image shows that, for me, it's not even sorting strictly by date within a thread. My display is set for classic oldest first, with threading.

And I'm not sure what is achieved by going to the Config Editor when all these sorting options are available via the column buttons in the display, and via View|Sort By in the menu.

Most users of threads seem to be of a mindset that appreciates the logic of showing things in natural order, so most habitual users of threaded displays wouldn't want them all upside down.

We're straying into top-posting vs bottom-posting territory here. I'll close on this note:

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing in e-mail?

As far as I am aware, those two settings set the default sort order for new folder.

As far as I am aware there is no way to sort a thread from newest to oldest. That was partially the impetus behind the conversations add-on. That and a fondness for the google way of viewing mail as a single item. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/?src=search
