replied or forwarded mail wont deliver

Whenever I try to respond to an email by either forwarding or replying I get the 'delivering mail' indication. It then times out & responds that the mail could not be delivered. I have to cut & paste all the info into a new email for it to work. This is a simple email with no images or other extras?
