Firefox (34.0.5) is my primary browser...with windows XP service pack 3

A web site that I frequently go to and sign in is not working properly.

When I click the sign in box nothing happens. (it used to be the box would open and I could sign in)

However, if I right click the sign in box the sign in box opens and I can sign in..

If I use Internet explorer the sign in works as it should no problem..so it seems like something in Firefox changed and is causing this issue.

Help!

Actually if I right click and choose open in a private window...then the sign in box opens.

Hm. Could you please try visiting the website again, and then reload the webpage while bypassing the cache using one of the following steps:

  • Hold down the Shift key and click the Reload button with a left click.

OR

  • Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows and Linux)
  • Press Command + Shift + R (Mac)

Let us know if this solves the issues you are having.

I tried the solutions you put forth...did NOT make a difference

That "Sign in" button opens a pop-up via JavaScript, so make sure that you aren't blocking JavaScript.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Yes, with firefox in safe mode the sign in works properly.

The ONLY appearance theme listed is the Firefox default 34.0.5 theme.

How do I determine what is causing the conflict?

Only one add on looks to be activated and that is Shock Wave flash, and Open H264 Video Codec..both say always activate

All of the rest (including JAVA) say ask to activate.

Next?

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

See:

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder in profile folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected
