How does Firefox Sync work exactly when multiple devices already have whole sets of bookmarks and individualized settings on them?

It seems like every syncing Tutorial or How-To describes setting up a syncing process when there aren't that many things to sync yet. I use Firefox on 3 PCs and an iPhone and because of nightmare situations with Chrome syncing, I've been hesitant to sync together my Firefox use (I DONT want exponential duplications of my bookmarks; I DON'T want misinformation about how to control what syncs and what doesn't; I DO want want to manage my browsing in a way that's intuitive and non-erratic [subtext: I f***ing hate how Chrome set up its syncing capabiilities]).

If I initiate a sync, does one devices preferences take precendent in situations where there are conflicting settings in place? It seems like one would obviously have to. How do you manage that? How exactly are bookmarks and add-ons and themes integrated? I'm curious because I honestly can't imagine how this will work without major problems arising.

If anyone can answer any of these questions, address any of these concerns, or provide relevant info I'd much appreciate it. Thanks.
