Why can I not tick the box in the setting to get fire fox to remember my passwords

I go into firefox security setting but the remember passwords for sites box in grey and it does not let me tick this box

Sounds like you were using Private Browsing mode. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/private-browsing-use-firefox-without-history
