how do I fix --there have been a lot of updated virus protection lately on McAfee, takes forever to delete a message

This happened once before after McAfee antivirus was installed. Someone suggested unclicking something, can't remember what it was now. It worked then . When i try to delete messages in Thunderbird, it takes forever and I get "Mozilla not responding" . Can someone tell me how to fix this?? Thanks Lorrelaine
