At the top of my Firefox screen, the minimize, maximize and close buttons are hidden by a stripe that goes the width of the window. They still work, but I have to know where they are to use them.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thanks, I tried that but it didn't make any difference.

You can try to disable transparency.
See:

Right click in a free space on your desktop.
Left click on Personalization.
There are four options in Windows 7 at the bottom of the screen, choose "Window Color and Appearance".
Select a border color
Uncheck: "Enable transparency"

I never found anything about transparency but something that I did in the personalization fixed it. Thanks!
