For the last three (3) days, my Security software has been trapping and not allowing a link that contains a virus. It is Oce8038.netsolhost.com. Attached to this is something called BLACKLIST. It also states that it is coming from the process of FIREFOX. I know you recently had an updated version. Could it have contained a virus??? I am at a loss. Any info would be appreciated...

Thanks.

Hi Ann, that doesn't sound like a server that Firefox uses for the various files it retrieves.

Do you think your security software is saying that the server you mentioned is on their blacklist (known to be a source of bad files) or that Firefox is trying to download a blacklist from that server?

When does the alert appear? For example: when first starting Firefox, at a certain time of day, after visiting certain sites, etc. How often does it appear? That pattern could be helpful in tracking down the source of that request.

If Firefox is your default browser, then when an external programs want to open a link, Windows typically will send it to Firefox. You could temporarily make Microsoft Edge your default browser and see whether this has any effect on the alerts. If the alerts start mentioning Edge, then you know that some other program on your computer is sending the request.

Within Firefox, you could change your Home / startup page to a blank page. That way, if the request is triggered by a shortcut or Pocket story in the page, it won't be sent when you open a new window. That is on the Settings page, Home panel.

Thanks for the reply. When this appears again, I will write down exactly what the security software says. We use AVAST for security. I do know that it states that it blocked and would not allow access to that site. It first appeared when I went to FOX News website. Then next time, it was on a Yahoo home page, same message. When it happens again, and I'm sure it will, I will try to take a screen shot of the message and attach it to the next post. Yes, we do have Edge. I started to transfer some of our bookmarks to favorites on Edge, but haven't finished yet. And lastly, I am Wally, Ann's husband (LOL). The account was put in her name for some reason. She is really a novice when it comes to computers, whereas I spent 30 years in the field, but mainly the "big iron", like IBM mainframes... Life was much simpler then...:) Thanks for your reply...

Hi Wally, sorry about "assuming" your name. It doesn't surprise me that sites with the heaviest advertising could trigger a warning relating to a site you aren't visiting directly.

If you've never tried out an ad blocker, you could look into one. Among the free options, this one is very highly regarded: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/ . Please keep in mind that from time to time a site won't work correctly when you use an ad blocker, and you may need to use its toolbar button to unblock some content to get things working on that site.

You can possibly check the about:networking page (HTTP, DNS).

You can open "about:" pages via the location/address bar. The "about:" protocol is used to access special pages. You can find all available about: pages listed on the about:about page.

Thank you for the replies. I will try the ad-blocker and will post any results that may occur/help. Thanks again, gentlemen...
